THE PRODUCT:
At Café Kreyol, they believe that quality and sustainability are symbiotic. They also believe farmers should get paid based on the quality of their product, paying up to 300% higher wages than what Fair Trade requires for truly exceptional coffee. This is why Direct Trade – as it’s termed – is now the backbone of Café Kreyol’s mission.
Moreover, Café Kreyol makes it a point to be just as committed to their clients as their farmers, and is why they vow to be transparent. In fact, their coffee is 100% traceable throughout it’s entire journey to your cup. [If you would like to know how, please contact them directly and they are happy to help.]
With flavors such as Defense Against the Dark Arts, which is an Espresso from Haiti with a silky body and a heavy complex shot, or their Sleepyhead (Decaffeinated) brew which contains Mountain Water Processed Dominican coffee that creates a balanced body [with notes of Fruit and Nuts that round off to a hint of cocoa in the finish], you are sure to find a flavor you’ll love. In fact, Café Kreyol offers 10 different roasts to complement the moods of all who are lucky enough to try it.
THE COMPANY:
As the owner of Cafe Kreyol puts it, he’s experienced life at it’s darkest. From homelessness and not knowing where his next meal would come from, to even years behind bars, Joseph Stazzone’s experience in Haiti helped to give him a new perspective on life, and change it for the better.
In 2012, Joseph set out with a new heart and a strong desire to initiate redemptive change in Haiti. Using his survival skills and a few non-accredited business skills he had picked up along the way, his mission was to help others who lived in a similar hopelessness to what he once experienced himself. Once there, he bought a motorcycle and scouted out what remained of Haitian coffee farmers. In the 1960’s Haiti actually produced over half the entire world’s coffee supply. Due to dictators, deforestation, and endless natural disasters, they now produce less than 1%. Slowly learning the language, he began to share his vision of sustainable employment with local growers, and Cafe Kreyol was born.
Today Café Kreyol has expanded their operations to several other countries including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, and Honduras. Their story continues as they work to alleviate poverty in rural coffee growing regions, one cup at a time.
HEALTH-WISE:
*When I was pregnant with my first, I completely stayed away from coffee. This was fine because I could pretty much nap whenever I wanted (since I worked from home and didn’t have another child to chase around). However, while pregnant with my daughter, this was a much different story. Granted, I did stick with decaf 95% of the time, just the scent of my morning brew helped to jostle me awake and into my day more effectively.
As most Medical Professionals say, I believe that 200mg or less of caffeine a day is completely safe for both pregnant and nursing moms, which is about 2 ½ cups of home-brewed coffee (depending on how big you consider a cup). Even while nursing, I require a cup of coffee every morning and have never noticed it having a negative effect on my children, nor have I heard of it affecting the other children that I send milk to on a regular basis. (More on that another time.)
With all that said, please consult your healthcare provider while pregnant or nursing and ask if drinking coffee is a safe choice for you. And remember, decaf can be a safer choice – just make sure it’s not chemically processed.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
If you haven’t noticed, I’m all about coffee. From Cold-Brew to freshly brewed and hot, if it’s morning, you are sure to find me with a cup! Having tasted my first “quality” cup down in Costa Rica when I was merely 17-years old, I have become somewhat of a self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur over the past 10+ years and feel about coffee how many do about their wine.
With that said, there really are a lot of great coffee brands out there these days and is why I have come to look beyond the mere taste of the coffee, but at the full process of the beans themselves and where they come from.
This is why I have come to like Café Kreyol so much, because it’s not only the quality of the beans that are so great – it’s the fact that their process of making them is helping those who are less fortunate – and is what truly makes this brand stand out above many others.
Want to help those in Haiti and help make a difference too?! The Own-A-Tree Project is a joint effort of Café Kreyol and GSI Haiti, offering you the opportunity to purchase a coffee tree for a farmer in Haiti–for the average price of a cup of coffee here in the US! After your purchase, the tree will be planted from an organic coffee seed at our high elevation nursery, grown and cared for until it is ready to produce coffee fruit, and then given at cost to a farmer in need. Each Arabica Blue Mountain tree will produce about 3 times as much coffee fruit as the variety the farmers previously used and each plant takes only 4-5 years to start producing enough to be profitable. Keep in mind that when you purchase a tree for under the Own-A-Tree Project, all of your donations are 100% tax deductible.
