For MOMS, MOMS-TO-BE, and Toddlers 1+*
Claiming that something is “perfect” is a pretty bold move. Especially in a “bar filled world” where every company thinks they have the “next best thing”. From the perfect amount of protein, to the perfect taste or perfect calorie count, every company thinks that their product is just that – perfect.
But to call yourself “Perfect Bar” you must really be something special. Well if you look at the history behind Perfect Bar and how it all came to be about, their story is… kinda perfect.
THE PRODUCT: Stemming from their dad’s, Dr. Bud Keith’s belief that “whole foods are the only acceptable source of nourishment for your body,” along with his desire to share and help others, the Keith kids spent many years growing up traveling around in a motorhome while their dad lectured and taught others how to live a healthy lifestyle.
That motorhome is where Perfect Bar was born; makes sense when you realize that Dr. Bud needed a way to feed 8 kids a healthy meal while on-the-go. Constantly tinkering with recipes, one day he ground up a bunch of dried fruits and vegetables, mixed in some freshly ground peanut butter and honey, and then took one bite and declared, “it’s perfect”…
Selling Perfect Bars like other kids sold lemonade, the oldest siblings (of the 13 kids) eventually got together and gambled it all to turn their family recipe into a business to help provide for their dad’s unfortunate cancer medical bills.
Since their Dad has passed, the “kids” have come to realize that his principles live on – that food has to be real and that family is what it’s all about. Everything they learned off the beaten path they have put into running their company, as brothers and sisters. All of that is why they say Perfect Bar is “Grounded in Perfection.”
Found in the refrigerated section, due to its lack of preservatives and it’s quest for that just-made fresh taste (both a definite plus), Perfect Bars are available in Peanut Butter, Carob Chip, Fruit & Nut, Cranberry Crunch, Almond Acai, Almond Butter, and Almond Coconut; you can also buy “mini” sizes that come in 100-calorie servings.
NUTRITION-WISE: Built on the foundation of 20 organic superfoods, mixed with freshly ground peanut or almond butter, high quality protein, and then sweetened with just enough organic honey, Perfect Bar is made without any GMOs, preservatives, refined sugars, or other unnecessary filler ingredients. They even make a vegan flavor that uses low glycemic organic dates as the sweetener for those who don’t eat honey and don’t do dairy.
Thanks to Perfect Bar’s use of nutrient-dense organic whole foods, these bars provide a great source of vitamins and minerals on-the-go. They are also gluten-free and full of both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fats that your body uses for cell repair and fighting inflammation.
However, for those who are intolerant to dairy, their vegan Almond Coconut Perfect Bar is the only flavor recipe that does not contain dairy. Every other Perfect Bar calls for Grade A nonfat milk powder, which contains the lactose, milk proteins, and milk minerals in the same relative proportions as they occur in fresh milk. Some flavors also contain dried whole egg powder, which is considered dairy as well.
Although made with organic honey, which acts as a natural preservative and prevents Perfect Bars from spoiling, these bars are actually refrigerated in order to maintain their optimal freshness, consistency and flavor. However, they can last 2 weeks unrefrigerated at room temperature, so they can easily be taken and eaten wherever your adventures take you.
Coming in at around 310 calories per serving, 150-160 of which are from healthy fats, you will also find 16-17 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and 17-18 grams of sugar per serving in the “regular” flavors of Perfect Bar. There are also “Lite” flavors which come in at around 200 calories, 100 of which are from fat, and contain around 7 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and 13 grams of sugar.
*Full of healthy ingredients, including fruits, vegetables, and nut butters, the Perfect Bar really is a great choice for someone needing to add a wide variety of nutrients into their diet. However, there is quite a bit of sugar grams (mainly due to the dried fruits) per serving, so for someone watching their sugar intake, I would consider eating these bars over several meals and/or days.
Thankfully, they do have Lite flavors which contain less calories and sugar, which is a much more reasonable amount, as well as snack-sized bars which are great for a quick afternoon pick-me-up or before bed snack. These sizes are also great for kids who don’t need that much sugar, or calories, in a snack.
With that said, if you don’t eat dairy, which my family doesn’t, you’ll need to be sure to only eat the Almond Coconut Vegan flavor.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Perfect Bars are healthy and delicious snack bars that really do taste freshly made – thanks to their constant refrigeration. Filled with protein, fiber, and lots of fruits and vegetables in a very palatable bar – thanks to the addition of peanut or almond butter and honey or dates – you are sure to get a good source of nutrients when eating these foods.
However, I will admit that there is more sugar per serving then I am comfortable with eating, so I usually will just break off a couple pieces as a snack throughout my day. The majority of the flavors also contain dairy, which is of no help to me since I don’t eat it, but fortunately their Vegan flavor is quite tasty and helps to ward off my hunger when I’m needing some extra fuel. Plus, the company is based out of San Diego (my hometown!), so I naturally feel a connection 😉
