Refillable water bottles with built-in filters for outdoor recreation and travel
Growing up as a gymnast, I’ve always been one to drink a lot of water. However, the older I’ve gotten the more I’ve become aware of the types of water I drink, as well as what I drink the water out of. This can be tricky when always on the go though, and is why I have fallen in love with LifeStraw Water Bottles – and am sure you will too!

THE PRODUCT:
LifeStraw has taken the concern out of drinking water by creating an award-winning filter technology that turns practically every water source into clean and tasty water! With multiple BPA-free bottles to choose from, as well as integrated filters that you can add to your own, [practically] every where you go will now be a source for freshly filtered water.
In fact, you can use LifeStraw at a river, stream, puddle, airport bathroom, or wherever else your thirst may strike. All you have to do is fill up the bottle, screw on the lid, and sip filtered water through the mouthpiece. Moreover, LifeStraw uses advanced hollow fiber membrane technology to filter up to 1,000 gallons or 4,000 liters of water to 0.2 microns. By removing 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella and 99.9% waterborne protozoa, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, you can be sure that the water you drink not only tastes great, but is good for you!

HEALTH-WISE:
The LifeStraw Go is designed for hikers, campers, travellers and other outdoor enthusiasts. It will filter out 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of waterborne protozoa. The filter uses advanced hollow fiber membrane technology (0.2 microns) to remove waterborne bacteria and protozoa up to 4,000 litres (1,000 gallons). The second stage of filtration is a replaceable activated carbon capsule to improve taste, reduce chlorine and organic chemical matter for up to 100 litres (26 gallons).
[If you are looking for a higher capacity filter to remove viruses, the LifeStraw Mission and LifeStraw Family 1.0 remove 99.999% of viruses, as well.]
All LifeStraw bottles are BPA-free and don’t contain any chemicals. All of their raw materials meet US Food and Drug Administration regulations and standards. There is also no aftertaste with LifeStraw: they don’t use iodine or iodinated resin chemicals.
THE COMPANY:
It started in 1994 when the Carter Center approached LifeStraw’s parent company, Vestergaard, to develop a filter that could remove Guinea worm larvae from water it was contaminating. Vestergaard designed a cloth filter but then evolved it into a more effective pipe form in 1999. Today, more than 37 million LifeStraw Guinea Worm filters have contributed to the near-eradication of the disease.
Inspired by the impact of the LifeStraw Guinea Worm filter, Vestergaard worked to develop a product that could filter out virtually all of the microbiological contaminants that make water unsafe to drink. The result was LifeStraw technology, introduced in 2005 as a personal “straw-like” filter. It was designed for people in developing countries who don’t have water piped in from municipal sources or other access to safe water, as well as emergency settings following natural disasters when water is contaminated.
Vestergaard recognized that, while the LifeStraw technology was effective for many uses, innovation around product design was important to meet the needs of different groups of people. In 2008, LifeStraw technology was adapted for in-home use and the LifeStraw Family water purifier was developed to purify larger volumes of water.
The LifeStraw portfolio has continued to evolve and now includes the high-volume LifeStraw Community purifier for institutional settings like schools and clinics (introduced in 2013), the LifeStraw Go refillable water bottle (2014) and LifeStraw Mission, a high-volume, collapsible bag ideal for campsites, group hikes and expeditions, launched in 2015.
Today LifeStraw is used in water products and projects in more than 64 countries around the world…but that’s just the beginning. Inspired by the positive health impact LifeStraw can have, Vestergaard will continue to innovate, introducing new LifeStraw products to meet a variety of needs and initiating equally innovative programs to bring them to the people who need them the most.
Giving Back:
Vestergaard does business to improve the health and quality of life for people across the globe. The LifeStraw Follow the Liters program, launched in 2014, helps contribute to this goal. Under this program, a portion of the proceeds of consumer sales for any LifeStraw product goes toward the purchase of LifeStraw Community purifiers which are distributed to schools in developing communities. As a result, each consumer purchase provides one school child in a developing community with safe water for an entire school year.
LifeStraw’s Give Back program also ensures sustainability through comprehensive planning, training, education and quarterly follow-up visits for a period of 5 years. Furthermore, the LifeStraw Safe Water Fund for Kenya helps them expand their reach to school children in Kenya.
The LifeStraw team is committed to redefining the safe drinking water space through technology innovation and product quality and design. In doing so, their work is driving sustainable access to safe drinking water by engaging governments, donors, and individual consumers to understand the problem and become an active part of the solution.
WHERE TO BUY:
LifeStraw products are available on their Online Store, or at select retailers nationwide.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
As a busy Mom whose kids [and I] are always on-the-go, drinking a lot of water is a necessity! Plus, being pregnant now, and then planning on nursing once the baby gets here, (not to mention the fact that it’s 100+ degrees almost every day!), my water intake is at an all time high! However, it’s not always easy finding truly fresh water. I mean, even restaurants serve tap water (unless you pay extra)! Now add to that the fact that we have been traveling quite a bit and away from home – where I make sure to always have fresh water in abundance – finding good quality drinking water isn’t all that easy!
Thankfully, I was introduced to LifeStraw a couple months back and have had their LifeStraw Go water bottle for myself, and their LifeStraw Play Kids bottles for both my children – which have truly been a lifesaver! From traveling in airports, to staying at the Lake and even for when my kids are at school, these LifeStraw products have been invaluable when it’s hot and there is no fresh water in sight!
And unlike other filtered water bottles I have used in the past, not only are these ones simple to use – you basically just drink and go – they are also super easy to clean! And probably best of all, unlike the other filtered varieties you can buy, with LifeStraw, once the filter has hit its max, it simply just won’t work (ie, you won’t be able to suck water through the straw and/or spout). Other filters will still seem like they’re working, but your water actually isn’t being filtered at all (and will probably taste pretty horrible)! I consider this a definite plus because I don’t want to be drinking water that I think is fine but actually contains bacteria – and I definitely don’t want my kids drinking it either!
Looking for a way to get clean and tasty water, whenever and where ever you are? Then you’ve got to try LifeStraw! Because it’s those small steps that make healthy living a lifestyle – so why not take one today?!
