For MOMS & MOMS-TO-BE and Babies 9 months+*
So here I go with another nut-free product review. Wasn’t I just commenting on how many “allergen-friendly” products there are on the market?!
…sorry, tangent. Back to the review.
When a product claims to be peanut and/or tree-nut “free”, this often just refers to the actual products themselves, and possibly the facility it was created in. It rarely encompasses the means by which the ingredients were transferred to the facility or the hands of the people who may have come in contact with the foods.
While this may seem a bit overboard for most [to consider that handlers should have to go through such strict measures], for someone with a severe nut allergy, this could literally mean life or death.
Thankfully Don’t Go Nuts is one of these companies, and truly takes to heart what it means to be completely nut-free. And did I mention their products are delicious!
THE PRODUCT: Don‘t Go Nuts is a division of Pinto Barn Inc., a company of loving people creating conscious products for whole lives. Inspired by Lily Pinto, who was diagnosed with severe peanut and tree nut allergies at age three, her family created Don’t Go Nuts for children like her and for the world around them.
With 6 flavors of bars, including Blueberry Blast Bar (Blueberries and White Chocolate) and Boogie Board Bash Bar (White Chocolate in a Sea of Honey Graham) and 5 flavors of Soy Butter, ranging from Sea Salt and Slightly Sweet, to Cinnamon Sugar and Chocolate, Don’t Go Nuts takes pride in making great tasting nut-free alternatives to popular every day foods.
NUTRITION-WISE: Not only are all of Don’t Go Nuts’ foods free of peanuts and tree nuts, so is the complete process “from field to fingers”. From start to finish, they use nut-free ingredients that are processed using only nut-free equipment. They even built their own nut-free facility and added all new equipment to prepare their foods.
Moreover, all of their products are Certified Organic and non-GMO, and thanks to the use of soy, are naturally high in protein.
With the Soy Butters coming in at around 200 calories per serving (which is pretty typical for a “nut[free] butter”, there is also about 110+ calories from fat. They also contain 10 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and around 2-4 grams of sugar, which is surprisingly low for flavors such as Cinnamon Sugar.
The bars run at about 175 calories each, with 35 or so of those coming from fat. They also contain about 3 grams of protein, 1-4 grams of fiber, and 15-18 grams of sugar. I consider this to be a lot of sugar, especially when it comes to kids. The bars also contain milk, which I personally don’t eat and neither does my little guy. For this reason, the bars aren’t for me. However, from those who do tolerate dairy, these bars are apparently really good! I would just consider it more of a treat or a dessert, as opposed to a snack bar.
*I would definitely feel comfortable about giving my baby some of the unsalted Soy Butter at a very young age (once they are eating solids: over 6 months). Some of the other flavors of Soy Butters are fine too, they just contain a bit more sugar and I don’t want my youngin exposed to sweet tasting foods too young, so I personally would wait a bit.
However, as mentioned above, I would wait on the bars until my child was probably closer to 7 or 8 just because I don’t think young kids need dessert foods – they don’t know the difference if we don’t ‘teach’ them!
