For MOMS and MOMS-TO-BE*
THE COMPANY: Bzzz Beans were first encountered on a trip to Ecuador, where the locals were seen enjoying espresso beans as a snack – as opposed to merely coffee – to keep them alert, aware, and more productive. Deliciously addicting, the creators of what is now Bzzz Beans couldn’t help but be happier and more productive, and wanted to share their newly discovered caffeine buzz with the rest of the world.
THE PRODUCT: Made with raw cacao that is sourced from certified, gold-medal producers/farm cooperatives in Ecuador, these chocolate covered espresso beans are all-natural and contain no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.
Manufactured in CA, USA, each bag of premium chocolate covered espresso beans provides the equivalent of two cups of coffee (8 beans = one cup).
NUTRITION-WISE: As mentioned, one serving of Bzzz Beans is equal to the caffeine content of approximately 2 cups of coffee. Furthermore, there are no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives in Bzzz Beans.
Coming in at 267 calories per pouch, 147 of which are from fats, you will also find around 3 grams of fiber, 3 grams of protein, and 24 grams of sugar. I will admit that this is quite a lot of sugar – and is more than you should generally be eating in an entire day – but if you eat a couple beans every now and again, just to give you that much needed afternoon pick-me up, it’s really not that bad.
*Pregnant women should really limit their caffeine intake as much as possible, having no more than 200 milligrams a day (according to the FDA). When I was pregnant, I had considerably less. However, I really don’t think a couple beans in the afternoon – when you’re really starting to drag – will do any harm to you or your baby, and may actually help motivate you to exercise and/or take more care of yourself then you otherwise might (thanks to your feelings of being overly exhausted).
WHERE TO BUY: Bzzz Beans are currently available on their Online Store. They are also sold in various stores across Southern California, including Brian Malarkey’s Green Acre locations, the campus at University of California, San Diego, and numerous independent coffee and juice bars throughout San Diego, CA. They are also expecting to be sold throughout Northern California at natural food retailers this Summer, and then plan to expand nationwide having recently partnered with United Natural Foods Inc.
FINAL THOUGHTS: As a Mom of two little ones, I have to admit that my morning cup of coffee is what really sets my day off on the right foot, especially since my toddler likes to wake up long before the sun does. And more than the caffeine itself (since I make a fairly small cup), it’s really just the ritual of it all. The aroma of it brewing, the warm mug, that first sip…
But then the day wears on and often by 2 o’clock I am wishing that I could close my eyes for just a minute and get an energy-reboot. Unfortunately, neither of my children ever let that happen, so I am left dragging through my day often wishing for another cup of Joe (although I never do it – mainly because I’m still nursing, but even more so because I don’t have the time to sit down and enjoy it)!
That’s why Bzzz Beans are so great! You don’t NEED time to make the coffee, or even drink it. Just pop a small handful of beans in your mouth and voila! Not only do you get a quick caffeine buzz, you also get to satisfy your sweet, and dark chocolate cravings all in a couple bites – a win, win in my book!
However, I will say that there is quite a lot of sugar in a serving of Bzzz Beans – more than I would typically eat in an entire day. But with even just a small handful of beans you will start to feel like yourself again – even if it’s all in your coffee-filled daydreams.
