Before state-of-the-art treatment procedures and modern-day medications were introduced, humanity depended on herbs to cure any health condition. Their health benefits might not be as effective as the current medicine engineered by professionals. Still, some herbs are undeniably more beneficial by themselves—not to mention healthier.

Throughout their lives, hormone imbalance has been a prevalent occurrence for women. Although there are times when it’s not an issue, some may consider it too troublesome when it disturbs their usual day-to-day. That’s why women tend to be more conscious about their natural health and wellness. Fortunately, consuming herbs could help maintain their health.

Here are some of the best herbs that might be helpful for women’s health:

1) Chaste Tree Berry

Also called vitex, chaste tree berries are highly recommended as a lady’s right-hand once her period starts. After all, the menstrual cycle is one of the most consistent causes of hormonal imbalance. During this timeframe, prolactin is often elevated the most.

For those unfamiliar with hormones, prolactin is often associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). While common among women, PMS tends to be highly bothersome since physical and emotional changes crop up, from tender breasts to drastic mood swings. Some symptoms could even disturb women’s usual goings-on, especially when they experience intense cramps or constipation.

Chaste tree berries regulate hormones by acting as a mediator for the brain and ovaries. They encourage excellent communication between both parties to alleviate hormone production. With their hormones at manageable levels, there’s no need for women to suffer through their period every month while keeping their reproductive health in top shape.

2) Raspberry Leaf

While the fruit is used in all kinds of deserts, what women should focus on when talking about raspberries are their leaves, especially those who experience irregular menstrual cycles. Because even though it’s sometimes normal to have an irregular period, that doesn’t stop the PMS symptoms from doubling.

However, regularly drinking raspberry leaf tea could help alleviate the pain while encouraging a regular monthly cycle, and it’s all thanks to fragrine and tannins. Fragrine is a relaxant for the uterus to soothe the intensity of period cramps. Meanwhile, tannins reinforce the uterus to lighten bleeding, ensuring it stays consistent every month.

3) Sage

Aside from raspberry leaves, sage might be a more well-known herb in many circles, especially for those familiar with different cuisine. After all, this herb has been used to add more flavor to any dish. But aside from cooking, women can enjoy various health benefits when taking it.

Even though it’s already troublesome to experience menstrual cycles every month, entering menopause doesn’t mean the trouble is over. Most women who enter this stage often experience its symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, or drastic mood swings. While some of the signs of menopause aren’t as painful as PMS, they’re still just as bothersome since they could hinder you from getting proper rest.

Sage contains anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that help regulate women’s body heat. Consuming it could help lower hot flashes and night sweats. In extension, it increases the chances for women to have a good night’s sleep, despite experiencing menopause.

4 ) Fennel Flower

Also called nigella sativa or kalonji, fennel flowers contain seeds rich in antioxidants and natural chemicals only produced by plants, namely thymoquinone. Thymoquinone is a type of phytonutrient that combats all sorts of health conditions, from bacterial infections to joint inflammation. It can even protect women from experiencing the full brunt of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is a hormonal problem found among women during their reproductive age. Signs of this condition can be seen in irregular periods and excess facial and body hair due to high levels of androgen. Fennel flowers assist in regulating hormone balance for women with PCOS. Furthermore, studies have discovered that this herb shows similar behavior to estrogen, which is ideal for women experiencing menopause.

5) Avena Sativa

For those who want to enjoy having sexual intercourse but whose libido is at an all-time low, natural aphrodisiacs like avena sativa are highly recommended. Because compared to manufactured aphrodisiacs, avena sativa possesses different health benefits aside from elevating libido. And some of them might be clued in by the herb’s other name, oat straw.

Although it’s a source of carbohydrates, oats contain high levels of calcium that strengthens bone health. Considering how women are more prone to osteoporosis than men, consuming avena sativa could help prevent that health condition and support their long-term bone health. On top of that, it also contains Vitamin D, which helps absorb calcium efficiently and optimizes the immune system.

Be Careful

Despite how they all work to boost one’s health, taking herbs without knowing anything else might do more harm than good. After all, some herbs aren’t backed by enough studies that guarantee their effectiveness. That’s why, before consuming any herbs, consult a professional about whether it’s safe to eat them, preferably an OB-GYN.
