THE COMPANY:
Kuli Kuli Bars were developed after Lisa Curtis, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger, started experiencing early signs of malnutrition — a condition that affects over 18 million children across West Africa – due to the limited amounts of fruits and vegetables she was able to get her hands on. When a friend told Lisa about moringa, a local tree with highly nutritious leaves and handed her a bag of kuli-kuli (a Hausa food made from peanuts), she got to thinking.
After incorporating Moringa into her diet, Lisa began to regain her strength, and realized that this could be a solution to the malnutrition and poverty in her village. Upon returning to the U.S., Lisa worked with her childhood best friend, Valerie Popelka to create the first prototypes of what is now known as Kuli Kuli Bars.
Going beyond your typical product-based company, Kuli Kuli carefully manages their supply chain to source only a portion of each harvest for Western consumption. They also make it a point to pay fair wages, so they can ensure that superfoods like Moringa benefit those who need them the most.
THE PRODUCT:
Starting out with 3 flavors of their Kuli Kuli bars (you can read our review, here), Kuli Kuli has recently developed a line of healthy energy shots. Containing half a cup of leafy greens per serving, these Moringa Green Energy shots are available in three flavors, including Coconut Lime, Ginger Lemon and Raspberry.
Coming in at a mere 35 calories per shot, they also contain 1 gram of protein, 5 grams of sugar, and have a ½ cup of leafy Moringa greens inside each tiny bottle. Plus, each serving will give you up to 6 hours of jittery-free sustainable energy and are vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO Project Verified.
NUTRITION-WISE: Known as “the miracle tree”, the leaves of the Morina oleifera have been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for centuries in a vast amount of cultures. Said to cure or prevent around 300 diseases, the modern scientific community has begun to validate many of these claims with over 1300 studies, articles and publications on Moringa.
Native to South Asia, this rapidly growing tree is now widely used throughout the tropics. Moringa’s high levels of protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin A has led many organizations to advocate the plant as a “natural nutrition for the tropics.” Kuli Kuli has jumped on this as well, and is now including the Moringa leaves into their new Green Energy Shots.
Containing ½ a serving of greens per bottle, and all 9 essential amino acids, Kuli Kuli’s new Green Energy Shots also contain the caffeine equivalent to ½ a cup of coffee, as well as vitamins C, A, E, and iron.
While caffeine can give a quick boost of energy, what really kicks the body into gear is a healthy diet and is why these Energy Shots really do work! As you probably know, when the body has everything it needs (such as essential amino acids and vitamins), it runs better and inherently has more energy. Yet, when it’s running low on a particular mineral, iron for example, the body can suffer fatigue since [iron] is essential in the blood’s ability to transport oxygen in the body.
*With about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee (thanks so green tea extract), these energy shots really can be a healthy way to help you through your day – whether or not you are pregnant [since your are “safely” allowed to have 200mg of caffeine per day]. However, I know that many people don’t feel comfortable ingesting any amount of caffeine while pregnant, which is totally OK too! With my first, I didn’t have any; with my second, I would have a cup or so of coffee since there would be no way I could get through my day chasing around a toddler without it 😉 So in conclusion, do what you feel is best for you and always check with your physician before starting any new supplements or changing up your routine!

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Moringa is definitely something that has grown in popularity – since I was first introduced to it back in 2014 – and is even an ingredient in my newest endeavor: JAB It UP Super Powders!
It’s latest mode of ingestion? Energy Shots! Thanks to Kuli Kuli, you can now get all of the good-for-you nutrients found in Moringa, including Calcium, Vitamin A, Fiber, and even Iron, in a “shot”. As one of the easiest ways to increase your daily vitamin intake (besides a pill), these shots will also give you a gentle burst of caffeinated energy, all for around 35 calories.
However, I must admit that these Energy Shots aren’t for the faint of heart. Although they are slightly sweet and come in 3 flavors that sound pretty appealing, they do have a gritty texture and are best downed, as opposed to sipped on daintily. Their real saving grace though is the fact that they don’t contain anything artificial or questionable, and are an easy and convenient way to help get you through your hectic day.
Try any or all of Kuli Kuli’s Energy Shots today and see for yourself what a little burst of natural energy can feel (and taste) like!
