FOR MOMS, MOMS-TO-BE, & TODDLERS 2 YEARS+*
There’s no denying that I’m a big fan of kombucha. From the way it tastes (yes, I do really like it!), to the way it makes me feel, kombucha is one of those products that I literally have every single day. Even while pregnant*, this sparkling, fermented tea can do wonders for your health.
And it’s not just me that feels this way. Over the past few years, the popularity of these ancient “wonder drinks” has exploded. Once only being available at specialty health food stores, even your local supermarket now sells kombucha, with new companies and vendors popping up all over the place as well.
So how can you differentiate one brand from the other? Well with Kombucha Wonder Drink, the fact that they don’t have to be kept refrigerated – like every other brand out there on the market – is a pretty big distinction if you ask me.
THE PRODUCT: Kombucha (kom-boo-cha) is a fermented tea that boasts a legendary reputation for promoting wellness, dating back thousands of years in both Eastern Europe and Asia. Unlike sugared teas and soda, kombucha is lighter and has a clean, refreshing taste and finish. It is often described as light, refreshing, effervescent, slightly sweet and subtly tart.
And while many companies have tried to ride the wave of popularity for these sparkling and flavorful fermented teas, those at Kombucha Wonder Drink have truly made themselves unique by not only using fresh-brewed organic teas infused with organic fruit concentrates, but using a proprietary process to lightly pasteurize their beverages. In doing this, Kombucha Wonder Drink still includes all the benefits of drinking kombucha, while eliminating all but a trace amount of alcohol, as well as unwanted bacteria.
Furthermore, Kombucha Wonder Drinks don’t have to be refrigerated, like all of the other kombuchas on store shelves, making this drink not only super tasty, but extremely convenient! Available in cans and glass bottles, flavors range from Traditional, to Asian Pear & Ginger, Green Tea & Lemon, Essence of Peach, Essence of Lemon, Essence of Mango, Essence of Juniper Berry, Spearmint & Lemon Myrtle, Niagara Grape, and Cherry Cassis.
NUTRITION-WISE: Kombucha hosts a whole list of benefits, ranging from its ability to energize, to helping your body cleanse and detoxify. And although Kombucha Wonder Drink products are pasteurized, they still contain the naturally occurring acids that are known to promote health and boost vitality (including: gluconic, lactic and acetic acids, among others).
Since Kombucha Wonder Drink products are pasteurized, many would like to know what the difference is between their drinks and raw kombucha. Well, here you go:
Making kombucha requires a starter culture very similar to a sourdough starter or yogurt culture.
This culture creates a cellulose fiber mat that is included in raw beverages, but that is actually indigestible.
Kombucha Wonder Drink products are pasteurized, ensuring the absence of alcohol and ensuring they are “safe beverages”.
While pasteurization results in the absence of a live culture, the beneficial organic acids resulting from the fermentation process remain.
I will say that there is quite a bit of sugar in Kombucha Wonder Drinks, especially when compared to some of the other brands – coming in at around 12 mg of sugar per serving (in the bottles), which equates to the beverage having around 50-60 calories. However, when compared to soda, or even fruit juice for that matter, this really isn’t that much. Plus, the cans contain closer to 8 grams of sugar, which I feel is a much better number in regards to sugar content.
Kombucha Wonder Drinks also contain a small bit of caffeine (as do the vast majority of kombucha beverages), in the equivalent of about 1/3 of a typical cup of coffee. This is due to the use of either organic oolong tea, organic green tea, or herbal tea. However, thanks to all of the other properties contained in kombucha, you won’t feel the least bit “jittery” but instead, these drinks are known to bring on a sense of calm and well-being that can easily be enjoyed every day.
*If you are a Mom-to-be or are breastfeeding, please do not start drinking Kombucha. There are a random few people who have been known to have a bad reaction to it, and therefore it is best to only drink it if you know you will not have any reactions. Furthermore, you do not want to drink large amounts of Kombucha as it is a Detoxifier. To learn more, please read our article about Drinking Kombucha While Pregnant or Breastfeeding.
In regards to kids drinking kombucha: I would start-out with only giving them a couple of sips in the beginning, see how their reaction is, and then go from there. Better yet, I would mix some of it with water to give it a muted effect. As mentioned, a few people have been known to have a bad reaction to it, and I’d hate that to be my child. Furthermore, the detoxifying effect will be magnified in a child, since their bodies are so small, so their serving size would be much less than an adult. However, there are tons of good-for-you properties in kombucha that children can benefit from as well, so I wouldn’t be afraid of giving them a couple sips here or there by any means.
WHERE TO BUY: Kombucha Wonder Drink products can be conveniently purchased Online (see Pasteurized Bottles or Pasteurized Cans), or you can use their Store Locator to find a retail location near you.
FINAL THOUGHTS: I’ll admit the first time I tried kombucha I was not all that impressed. Slightly tart and yet still somewhat sweet, I was thrown-off by both the mouth-confusion and the smell. I knew that these drinks were good for me though and would help with my ever-troubled digestive system, so I didn’t give up on them.
Now here we are, 4 years and [almost] 2 kids later, and drinking kombucha is now part of my daily routine. And as you would assume, I have drank quite a large variety of brands over the years (even making my own on occasion), enjoying some of them much more than others.
With that said, I am not “tied” to any one company in particular, and do like to switch up flavors and therefore, brands, depending on what I’m in the mood for that day. The one thing that sometimes gets to me though is the fact that kombucha always needs to be refrigerated. This is tough when I’m out and about all day and want to bring a bottle with me. That is until I discovered Kombucha Wonder Drink and realized that their products don’t have to be kept cold – thanks to their pasteurization process.
Great over ice, or refrigerated if that’s an option, these drinks are definitely best enjoyed cold and are perfect for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner, as a midday pick-me-up, or as an alternative to a nice icy cocktail – especially while pregnant ;).
