Who doesn’t love a good fried onion, especially when it’s fried to perfection?! But with all that oil and grease… are bodies don’t necessarily love them the same way and is why I wanted to come up with a healthier alternative that tasted just as good!
So, step in the Air-Fryer French Fried Onions (although you can make them in your oven too)! Lightly battered, this dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan topping will make the whole family happy! And will top your to perfection!
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 medium Onion, halved and sliced (I used shallots instead, and love how they turned out!)
- 1 cup Plain Unsweetened Almond Milk or other Nondairy Milk
- 1/3 cup Gluten-Free Flour
- ¼ tsp. Ground Pepper
- ¼ tsp. Salt
- ¼ tsp. Smoked Paprika, optional
- Canola or Olive Oil cooking spray
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Preheat the air-fryer to 390°F (although you can also do these in the oven at 400 F, you’ll just have to cook them longer).
- Combine Onions and Almond Milk (or other milk) in a medium bowl.
- Let stand for 15 minutes.
- Drain (discard Milk) and return to the bowl.
- Sprinkle with Flour, Salt and Pepper and then toss to coat.
- Transfer to the air-fryer pan and generously coat with cooking spray.
- “Fry”, stirring once or twice, until tender and crisp, 5-7 minutes, or so.
- Top your and enjoy!
NOTES:
To make ahead: The Air-Fryer Onions can stand at room temperature for up to 2 hours.
