Is it just me, or is blue food just more fun?! I’m seriously obsessed these days and whenever I find the chance to add some blue into my meals, I am all about it! I will say that I’m completely anti-food coloring though, so am glad to have discovered Blue Spirulina.
So what is Blue Spirulina, you ask?
Blue Spirulina is derived from a blue-green algae that contains phycocyanin: the pigment that gives spirulina (which is a deep green) a slightly bluish hue. To make blue spirulina, the water soluble antioxidant phycocyanin is extracted from the spirulina and then sold as a blue powder. Phycocyanin is only found in spirulina and some other species of blue-green algae and is one of the key differences between spirulina and other green foods like chlorella, wheat grass and barley. But besides just providing a beautiful blue color, phycocyanin is a powerful antioxidant.
Blue Spirulina also provides protein and is a great source of Vitamin B12. It also contains Vitamins A, B2 and Iron, as well as powerful antioxidants and phytonutrients such as carotenoids, GLA, and superoxide dismutase (SOD).
So now that you know the “secret ingredient” that makes my Blue Dreamin’ Smoothie it’s beautiful shade of blue, here’s the recipe to go along with it!
Blue Dreamin’ Smoothie Bowl
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup Frozen Strawberries
- 1/3 cup Frozen Mango
- 1/3 cup Frozen Pineapple
- ½ Frozen Banana
- 1/3 cup Cauliflower Rice
- 1 scoop Vanilla Vegan Protein Powder (I use this one, by Orgain)
- 1 scoop Blue Majik Spirulina (I use E3 Live or the Butterfly Pea Flowers by Majestic Herbs: linked here. The more you use, the brighter the color; although it’s not a cheap ingredient, so I try to use it sparingly.)
- 1 cup Almond Milk (use more or less depending on if you want a Smoothie Bowl or rather drink it from a cup; you can also sub with water, although it will turn out more icy in texture)
Toppings: (these are the ones I used, but feel free to switch it up, with whatever you may have)
- 1 Rise Bar, chopped into pieces (I used their Vegan Sunflower Cinnamon flavor)*
- ¼ cup Toasted Coconut Chips (I used these ones, by Dang)
- ¼ cup Fresh Blueberries
Directions:
- Simply blend all of the ingredients together.
- Pour into your vessel of choice.
- Add your favorite toppings, and…
- Enjoy!
