The entire experience of a mother’s pregnancy, from conception through delivery, is captivating, emotional, and joyful. However, a woman’s body goes through various hormonal and mental changes throughout pregnancy, resulting in a variety of health complications and disorders.

One of the most prevalent issues that most women face while expecting is skin problems. These skin conditions can have a detrimental impact on their emotional and physical well-being, resulting in low self-esteem, confidence, and stress, which is harmful to both the mother and the child.

After the baby is born, most of these skin problems will go away on their own. However, there is something you can do about them while you’re pregnant. The first thing you should do is put effort into finding a dermatologist who has expertise in this area and refrain from taking any medications or treatments while you are pregnant without visiting your skin specialist to avoid future complications.

Types of Skin Diseases

Furthermore, the following skin diseases may occur during pregnancy which can be cured with proper medical advice followed by a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritious diet and a regular exercise regimen.

  • Hyperpigmentation – Melanin is a natural skin pigment that gives your skin, hair, and eyes their color. This chemical increases dramatically during pregnancy, resulting in darker skin.
  • Striae–  Stretch marks as they are also called are scars that appear on skin that have been expanded by childbearing or additional weight or reduced by significant weight loss. They are typically reddish or purplish in hue when they first appear, then become glossy and striped with silver or white.
  • Skin Tag– A skin tag is a small noncancerous flap of tissue with a sagging tissue that hangs from your skin. They’re most commonly found on the neck, chest, back, under the breasts, and in the genital area. They’re common in pregnant women and usually don’t cause any pain unless scratched or rubbed harshly.
  • Acne – It is a common skin disease in the form of pimples, dry patches, itchiness, inflammation of the skin that escalates during pregnancy.
  • Psoriasis – Researches show a link between mild psoriasis and pregnancy difficulties, such as pregnancy-induced hypertension illnesses. They have highlighted a trend toward an infant with a low birth weight in psoriasis patients.
  • Varicose veins – These distorted, swollen veins, primarily found in your legs, are caused by chemical changes throughout the body.
  • Plaques and lesions – Itching, burning, or stinging can occur due to lesions. They might be as small as a cotton swab or as large as a supper dish. Plaques are formed when they come together in a large region. These lesions can occur on the abdomen, legs, arms, and buttocks during pregnancy.
  • Blisters appear on your navel and can spread to other parts of your body. This disease may increase your risk of complications, such as preterm labor.
  • Intrahepatic Cholestasis – This liver disease causes skin irritation on the palms of your hands and the surface of your feet, but no rash. It can result in premature birth.
