A Mom’s Guide
Building a safe environment is extremely important for the whole family, but there is not a universal manual on how to do so since multiple factors contribute to it! Certain things are clear and seem completely regular, but some are completely dismissed – when trying to achieve a healthy living situation for your family, everything should be considered. So here’s how to do it from a mom’s perspective!
Set Some Rules
Before anything else, you need to set some ground rules around the house, so your kids know what they can and can’t do! This is necessary if you want to provide a safe and healthy environment your family can thrive in. By having authority over your children, you are preventing a lot of dangers from happening from the get-go. You need to teach your kids that some things are simply dangerous and shouldn’t be touched or played with. But even so, you should also take further safety precautions by modifying those things, just in case your kid gets a little too curious. If you have anything dangerous in the house that can harm children, even kitchen knives and medication, it’s best that you keep them somewhere where they are out of reach from your kids!
Disinfect and Test Your Home
A lot of silent dangers can lurk around the house, especially if you have kids and pets. This is why it’s important to always keep your home clean as much as possible. It’s good to clean on a daily basis, but also to deep clean your entire home once in a while just for added safety. Having mold around the house can be dangerous for your family; it’s never good to be exposed to such a thing! Sometimes you can’t prevent it from happening due to accumulated water and humidity, but you can always try to clean it well and prevent it from spreading further! If you notice any weird smells and stains on your walls, make sure you inspect them and clean them on time!
Fireproofing
A fire can be easily started, but it can be extremely hard to put out, causing a lot of damage and potentially being harmful to your family. But there are certain safety precautions you can take in order to prevent this from happening! First of all, make sure that you turn off your stove once you are done using it. The same can be applied to the hair straighteners or any device that uses heat, too!
Also, you should never leave candles lit at night, as you never know if an accidental fire could start while you are asleep! Adding a smoke detector or a fire alarm is a bare necessity you should have in your house, especially in your kitchen!
Remodel Your Home Accordingly
Remodeling is sometimes necessary in order to make your home more livable. Especially if you moved into a new one, it’s nice when you modify it to your needs! Fixing up your bathroom and kitchen is crucial if you want a healthy life, but focusing on the yard is not a bad idea either!
Spending time in nature is important, but doing it safely should be your goal. Adding shade like retractable awnings in Columbus, Ohio, to your backyard is important in places where there are a lot of sunny or rainy days, as these are extremely popular and effective. This way, you and your kids can enjoy both the inside and the outside of your home, and spend quality time together no matter the weather!
Think About the Possible Allergies
If you are looking to get a pet, make sure you and your kids are not allergic. It’s devastating to find out you are allergic to a dog or a cat you just adopted, and having to give them away is never easy. To prevent this, and your allergies, you should either adopt or buy pets that are hypoallergenic, or get pets that can live outside!
Also, make sure that you get rid of dust and other triggers that can cause allergies in you or your kids, as they are annoying and should always be prevented if possible. If you want to live a healthy, unbothered life, you should definitely focus on maintaining your well-being – and starting with simple things such as allergies caused by things around the home you can easily get rid of is a great place to start!
Get Rid of Insects and Pests
Bugs are never fun around your home, so getting rid of them is the best idea! Not only are they scary for your children, but they are also pretty damaging and can cause havoc in your home. When it comes to insects like flies and mosquitos, having some sort of insect repellent in your home is the best option in order to keep them away, especially in the summertime. A lot of houses don’t have nets on their windows, so any insect can freely fly in, but with a repellent, you are lessening the chances of that happening!
Talk to Your Kids About Safety Measures
Lastly, you should definitely speak to your kids about safety on a regular basis, no matter how little or how grown they might be, as it’s best to be safe than sorry! Even the little things like turning off the boiler before taking a shower, or being safe around windows could save their life in the long run! Obviously, you should start teaching your kids about safety precautions from an early age, so they don’t have to learn from their own mistakes, as that can be dangerous! Trust and allow your kids to explore, but always try to prevent any dangerous situation from happening, especially when they are young and still in the learning stages!
At the end of the day, as long as you take the necessary precautions and educate your kids, there is nothing to be afraid about! Things can happen, accidents can occur out of nowhere, but it’s better to be prepared and already set some safety regulations as they can help a lot in the long run! With that being said, building a safe and healthy environment is a process, no one can get it perfectly the first time, but as long as you are trying and evolving you are on the right path!
