The immune system protects the body from foreign invaders such as toxins, fungi, viruses, and bacteria. It’s a complex system made up of different proteins, cells, and organs that all work together to defend the body against infection. This system is supposed to work effectively to prevent you from getting sick, but because of unhealthy habits and practices, your body’s ability to ward off illnesses significantly decreases.

While you can’t control when foreign invaders or infections enter the body, you can take full control in maintaining healthy habits that may keep your immune system in check. If you’ve been experiencing recurring and persistent infections, it may be because of a weakened immune system.

Bad Habits to Avoid

Your immune system is supposed to protect your health but it can’t do that if you don’t boost the system strong enough to keep up with the job. Although one of the most common causes of a compromised immune system is age, there are habits that are bad enough to contribute to its deterioration.

It’s important that you know these bad habits to avoid, especially now that a pandemic is still very much happening. Compromising your immune system is the last thing you want to do if your goal is to not catch the virus and pass it on to your family and friends. Doing your research could be extremely helpful in educating yourself about the immune system and how you can promote its functions. One great post to read is information about vitamins and supplements that the body needs to keep healthy.

For bad habits to avoid, this list below will be will definitely be beneficial for you to follow:

1) Smoking

You’ve heard and known it all your life—smoking is bad for your health. It weakens your immune system in more ways than one, making you susceptible to flu and colds. The moment you put a stick of cigarette in your mouth, you’re already damaging the linings of your nose and mouth, which are basically considered the first lines of defense of the immune system.

Smoking also impacts the body in a way that it makes the immune system work against you instead of working for your protection. In a study that was published recently, it has been found that smoking could lead to your immune system attacking the lung tissue.

2) Excessive Alcohol Intake

Consuming too much alcohol on a regular basis may also harm the immune system. Even one period of excessive alcohol intake could affect how the immune system responds to pathogens that are invading the body. This is because alcohol contains acetaldehyde, a major metabolite that could potentially impair your lungs’ ciliary function. As a result, the lungs are more prone to viral and bacterial infections.

3) Not Getting Enough Sleep

Lack of sleep can lead to your body becoming more prone to germs and viruses. When it does, it could take a while before you can recover because of the absence of cytokines, a kind of protein that helps in boosting the immune system and its functions. Cytokines are released by the body only during sleep, so if you’re not getting enough sleep, there won’t be enough cytokines to aid your immune system.

4) Consuming Too Many Unhealthy Foods

Your diet plays an essential role in making sure that the body is healthy and able to function properly. Poor nutrition can deplete the immune system and could eventually cause havoc in the different systems of the body. Aside from being susceptible to infections and diseases, unhealthy eating habits can also lead to obesity. When you’re overweight, the function and number of white blood cells in the body may deteriorate, thus weakening the immune system.

Eating foods that are high in saturated fats, sugar, and salt can have negative effects on your health. A healthy diet should include plenty of fresh produce like fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, protein, and healthy fats. And of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water, too.

In Conclusion

Your immune system can greatly help in keeping your body healthy. But then, it can only do so much when you’re not doing your end of the bargain to boost its functions. To make sure that your immune system stays strong and is able to fight off infections, you need to stay away from bad habits such as smoking, eating unhealthy foods, and drinking too much alcohol. You should also get enough sleep so your body can recharge and produce cytokines.
