How To Treat and Prevent Injuries

how to prevent injuries

Every day you wake up, take care of your responsibilities, and hopefully take care of yourself. You may exercise religiously, but do you make time in your daily life for injury prevention? Injury prevention goes beyond the simple concept of watching where you step. It incorporates wellness opportunities into your life to stop or slow an injury and move on to prevention and healing.

Taping for a Specific Injury

If you find yourself with an injury that tends to affect athletes who play on turf or who use footwear with less rigidity than others, you may have turf toe. This unique affliction is actually a sprain that occurs in the largest joint in your big toe. When you push off from the ground in a fast spurt or a sprint, you may experience this type of sprain. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to prevent further injury and reduce the pain.

The therapeutic tape will offer you helpful support where you need it most. If you are a taping novice, some tutorials will teach you how to wrap for turf toe. Once you have the basics down, it is an easy and effective way to help your body deal with an unfortunate injury. Taping also can help prevent bigger injuries in other parts of your foot or leg. As with any injury, knowing what to do and how to handle it will help you with your care.

Stretching

Routinely stretching your muscles is an important part of maintaining your physical health. Stretching helps increase and maintain muscle flexibility. Activities such as yoga and Pilates incorporate stretching into their basic tenets. These are both excellent workout options to add to your exercise regimen.

If you aren’t moving enough throughout the day, stretching helps to loosen muscles that have been sedentary throughout the day so that they do not shorten and become too tight, potentially causing an injury. Stiff and taut muscles are more likely to lead to muscle strain, joint pain, and potential damage. Even if you are active throughout the day, you still need to stretch. You should look for specific guides for your sport to see how to stretch the right muscles to prevent injury.  For example, you could look into stretching for basketball players to ensure that you are doing what you can to fend off preventable injuries.

Nutrition

Eating well is a significant factor in how your body functions on every level. Consuming high-quality foods helps keep your body energized. A healthful diet will boost your immunity and help prevent injuries. Foods such as protein aid in muscle tissue repair and a reduction in muscle loss following exercise.

Consuming the appropriate amount of calories per meal and per day helps keep up your energy. Having enough energy will allow your body to continue to operate at optimal levels for both everyday functions and athletic endeavors. Along with taking in the right amount of calories for your body size and activity level, the quality of calories will help you maintain a healthy weight versus taking in empty calories by way of non-nutritional food.

Hydrate Throughout the Day

Drinking fluids during the day is imperative for proper functioning. Staying hydrated benefits your mind through clarity of thinking and helping you feel less sluggish than if you were dehydrated. Water helps deliver essential nutrients that aid in cell regeneration, healing, and even cartilage repair as needed.

Fluid intake is available in many forms, depending on your preference. Add cucumber, lemon slices, or any other fruit to water for a refreshing flavor enhancement. Fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, or tomatoes are all high in water in addition to other beneficial nutrients.

With an active lifestyle comes the need to take care of your body. It is important to keep yourself strong to enjoy life for years to come.
