How to Make the Most out of your Outdoor Workout

Do you feel as though you aren’t as motivated as you could be when it comes to your outdoor workout? If so then now is the time for you to make a change. If you follow this guide, you should be able to start making the most out of the workouts you do.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is so important when working out. It’s also important if you are doing an outdoor workout. If possible, you need to hydrate before and then after your workout. This will stop you from experiencing heat exhaustion and even stroke. Never wait until you are thirsty to drink because if you do then this can be a sign that you are experiencing mild dehydration. If you’re not sure how much you need to drink, then you should be aiming for around 8 glasses per day.

Shield your Skin

Even if it is cloudy outside, you can still get sunburn. If you can, you need to try and wear sweat-resistant sunscreen where possible. Wearing a sun hat and even clothing that is made out of sun-protective fanfic will help you to safeguard your skin from exposure too. Exercising in the shade is also a good idea, if possible. If you are working out during the winter months then your skin will still be exposed to quite a lot of sun, so be mindful of this too. If you struggle with skin dryness in the winter months,  or if you have itchy eczema on legs then it’s wise for you to use a quality moisturizer.

Time it Right

Instead of working out in the middle of the day, you need to opt for a workout in the morning or in the evening. You need to do this when the sun isn’t as strong, if possible. When it is too hot, or too humid, you need to try and swap any high-intensity exercise for something that is much less strenuous. If you know that the weather is bitterly cold then one thing you can do is try and put on some extra layers, or even try and work out when you know that you can avoid any icy lanes. This is especially the case if you are running, so make sure you keep that in mind.

Consider the Terrain

Another thing you need to do is give some thought to the terrain. At the end of the day, running and walking outdoors is very different on the body when you compare it to running on a treadmill. Hard pavements can be tough on the body, so make sure that you land softly and that you run and walk on trails where you can. Your joints will thank you for this later.

Wear the Right Shoes

Be sure to choose shoes that are made with your workout in mind. Wearing the right footwear is so important as it will help to minimize the amount of pounding that your feet will have to deal with. Proper footwear will limit shock for your knees too, so be mindful of that if you can.

Wear some Bright Clothing

Neon workout gear, believe it or not, isn’t all about being trendy. Sometimes it’s about being safe. Always wear something bright such as neon running gear when you are exercising outside. Drivers will be able to see you much easier and this can help you to stay safe when you are on the go. If you are running at dusk or dawn then make sure that you add a blinking light so you can make sure that you are extra safe.

Don’t Go Alone

Where possible, make sure that you run or hike with people instead of going at it alone. If you can do this then you will be able to make any outdoor workout safer which will work in your favor. Outdoor workouts are one of the best ways for you to boost your mental health as they give you the chance to meet other people while getting some fresh air. That being said, when the nights draw colder, it can be difficult for you to avoid putting your health at risk. Going with a workout buddy is one of the best and easiest ways for you to connect with people who are close to you, and it can also help you to make the most out of your situation as a whole. Taking your pet is another way you can stay safe, especially if they have a blinking collar to alert drivers of your presence.
