We’ve all had a pretty tough year, regardless of where we live and our own personal situations. Things have changed tenfold, and for many of us, our lives have been completely turned upside down. This means that it’s the perfect time to start making plans to look after yourself. Self-care is now more important than ever and is why putting a plan into place for your physical and mental health can be a great boost. Here are some steps that everyone should take:
Find An Exercise Routine You Enjoy
Exercise is essential for mental and physical wellbeing. However, you’re hardly going to stick to a routine if you don’t really enjoy it. Try to find a type of exercise that you genuinely enjoy, and aim to do it a minimum of 3 times per week. Doing it in the morning can be great as it can be a wonderful way to set ourselves up for the day and enjoy more energy and focus throughout.
Book Your Health Exams
Don’t put off your health exams – get booked in as soon as you are able. If you’re well overdue for that eye exam, make it your mission to book in. Book a dental check-up while you’re at it, and anything else you may have been neglecting, too. These things might not seem so important with everything going on, but they can lead to bigger problems in the long run if left on the backburner.
Start Drinking More Water
Start drinking more water each day, even if it’s just a glass. Aim for 2 liters minimum, or more if you’re exercising. It’s so much easier to spread this out throughout the day, so don’t forget to carry a big bottle with you to drink from. You’d be surprised at how energetic drinking enough water can make you feel.
Prioritize Sleep
It’s time to stop doom scrolling until 2 am and time to start prioritizing getting a minimum of 7 hours a night. Only you can tell when you’ve had a good night’s sleep. You may need 8 hours, or even 9. Take into account the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep, too. To make it easier, ensure your bedroom is designed for a quality night’s sleep, and avoid technology right before bed. Cut down on caffeine and go for caffeine-free options after 3 pm, too.
Spend More Time On Your Hobbies
Self-care is doing things you enjoy, too. Read more, paint, and do the things you love to do. Do them because you enjoy them, and not for the outcome.
Cook For Yourself
Cooking for yourself can be an act of love. Take your time to use quality ingredients and really sit and enjoy the meal!
Plan and Schedule Your Free Time
Schedule your free time just like you would any other important activity. You can then use this time to do whatever you like, whether it’s catching up with a friend, practicing an instrument, or meditating. Free time gives you freedom and allows you to do what you feel like in the moment.
Having a strong sense of self is the foundation of confidence, courage, and strength through tough times. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by challenges when you don’t have strong personal support, so make yourself a priority this time around. Find your footing by engaging in activities that enlarge your perspective, like cultivating your faith and personal beliefs and finding time to make genuine connections. A life with a strong foundation can bear the strongest tests.
