Four Types of Parenting Styles and Their Effects On Kids

When it comes to your child, you must choose the optimal parenting style to ensure that they are given the correct support. Indeed, there are numerous different parenting styles that you could consider for your child, which is why it is best to weigh all of your options to figure out what works best for you as a family.

Here are four of the most common types of parenting styles and their effects on kids, both the good and the bad.

As Crafty Father Mother explain, “there’s no one parenting style that’s necessarily better than the others. You need to choose a parenting style that works best for you and your family to ensure that everyone is able to get along nicely.”

Four Types of Parenting Styles

There are four main types of parenting styles that you could consider. They are as follows:

Authoritarian Parenting:

This is one of the most commonly implemented parenting styles for many people and generally revolves around a premise whereby children should obey rules with little to no room for discussion of rules.

Though this style clearly establishes boundaries for children, it is often less nurturing and can lead to children developing a rebellious side and can put a great deal of pressure on the family as a whole.

Permissive Parenting:

This is often simplified as “kids will be kids”. This is almost the opposite of authoritarian parenting styles, and generally doesn’t use many rules or limitations. Instead, with this parenting style, children are left more to their own devices to determine what they should and shouldn’t do, and parents provide less guidance in this matter.

This style can potentially be a lot more relaxed for your family life and your child; however, your child may not learn the necessary boundaries that they should follow for a healthy lifestyle, since they are left without guidance.

Uninvolved Parenting:

This is another parenting style and is often one that parents implement without necessarily realizing it. Uninvolved parenting means that children are provided with little attention and are largely left to their own devices to play.

This can allow children to develop independence and can require much less time input from the parents; however, it can potentially leave your child struggling with relationships. It may also be more dangerous for your child, especially when they are young.

Authoritative Parenting:

This is generally the most widely encouraged parenting style, which typically blends a combination of features from all three of the other styles. It provides firm rules and instructions. However, it also provides support for the child and creates a more positive relationship between the parents and the child.

Final Thoughts

There are many different parenting styles that you could follow, but finding the right one for you and your family is absolutely crucial. To this end, we have summarized the four most common parenting styles and their effects to help you learn more about how you could optimize your own approach to childcare for your family.

This can help you ensure you have a good family life and relationship with your loved ones, and so, it is absolutely something that’s worth considering.
