Sun Cups: The Amazingly Delicious [Nut-Free] Chocolate Butter Cups

Posted by Jessica Boscarini on Thursday, March 20, 2014 Under: Food Reviews

Growing up, my mom always fed us pretty healthy. We always had to eat our vegetables, was given fruit in our lunch boxes, and dessert was not an every night occurrence. But I will admit that we ate a lot of snacks and treats that I personally do not want my children to eat (not to say my mom always knew about them)…

This isn’t because my mom didn’t ‘care’, but I feel that parents are much more aware of what goes into our children’s mouths these days. From gluten, to dairy, to too much sugar, it seems that there are a lot more can-NOT’s, than CAN’S. And while I know that this is good for my kids in the long-run, I don’t want them to have to feel deprived either.

Thank goodness there are healthier alternatives these days, especially when it comes to good, old-fashioned candy ‘bars’. I mean, what kid doesn’t want to sink their teeth into nut butter smothered with chocolate? [That was always my favorite.]

Now I have Sun Cups. And personally, I like them even better than the originals.

THE PRODUCT: Registered under Seth Ellis Chocolatier, Sun Butter and their delicious line of sunflower butter cups are not only great tasting, they are surprisingly good for you! With 4 mouth-watering flavors to choose from, including Dark Chocolate Sunflower Butter, Milk Chocolate Sunflower Butter, Caramel Cups, and Mint Cups, there is a flavor no matter what you’re in the mood for.

NUTRITION-WISE: It seems that everywhere you turn someone has an allergy of some-sort or another, with those related to peanuts being some of the worst offenders. Thankfully, Sun Butter was specifically created with this in mind, not only using sunflower butter as a substitute, but maintaining factories that are also peanut-free. Sun Butter Cups are also gluten-free, and don’t contain any soy or tree nuts either; plus, a majority of the ingredients are Organic.

Full of fiber and protein, and lower in sugar than most chocolaty treats, each cup contains approximately 120 calories, 80 of which are from fat, making it the perfect size to satisfy, without making you feel guilty (about you are your child eating it).

WHERE TO BUY: To get Sun Cups delivered right to your door, you can order them via their Online Store. Or, to find the store nearest you, please visit their Store Locator.

SYNOPSIS: I had actually never tried sunflower butter until I bit into a Sun Cup. And let me tell you, I’ve found a new favorite product! Surprisingly rich, with a texture that only the smoothest peanut butter can conjure up, sun butter is not only a great alternative, it’s a better choice in my opinion. Now take that and mix it with decadent dark chocolate, at 70% cocoa, and wow – deliciousness in the perfect-portioned “cup”.

A healthier option than the traditional peanut butter cups, Sun Cups are tastier as well, making the choice between the two a no brainer!

And when it comes to your kids, you can feel better about letting them “splurge” every now and again as well. Just don’t tell them where your stash is, because they might not be there when you get back!

Try one, or all of their flavors today and tell me you’re not a Sun Cups convert!
