FOR MOMS, MOMS-TO-BE, & TODDLERS 2 YEARS+*
THE COMPANY: GoMacro was founded in 2004 by mother and daughter team, Amelia Kirchoff and Jola Sonkin. When Amelia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, both women decided to take on the Macrobiotic Diet after research revealed that the whole grains, beans, fresh fruit and vegetables-based diet, along with the elimination of eggs, dairy, refined sugars, additives and processed foods, could help to heal Amelia and prevent further illness.
As Amelia got better, so did her appetite – and craving for sweets. Living on a farm, she began to experiment with the fruits and grains grown, as well as with local organic sweeteners to create wholesome, nutritious treats. When her daughter, Jola, tasted them she couldn’t believe how delicious they were and decided to call them MacroTreats. This was the beginning of GoMacro.
In September of 2004, Jola introduced the MacroTreats to local health food stores and their popularity quickly grew. The barn was renovated to accommodate a small commercial kitchen where the MacroBar was soon born. As the popularity of the MacroBar grew, so did the kitchen. Today, GoMacro is housed in a facility in nearby Viola, and the farm is used for research and development. GoMacro has experienced double digit growth since its inception and today MacroBars are sold throughout the US, Canada, Japan and UK.

Ellie's quote on her experience making the bar:
“MacroBars have been my go-to snack after a workout and when
I’m on tour. For the new bar, I wanted something that was sweet and a
good-source of plant-based protein,” commented Goulding. “I am honored to help
create a new product with a company that shares my values of healthy living and
THE PRODUCT: Created based upon the principles of the macrobiotic diet, MacroBars are 100% plant-based, non-GMO, Organic, Kosher and free of gluten, soy and dairy. They are also free from any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
With each of their 12 bars created with a specific purpose in mind, MacroBars come in a wide variety of flavors, including such flavors as Wholehearted Heaved (almond butter + carob), Protein Pleasure (filled with 12 grams of plant-based protein), and Everlasting Joy (Ellie Goulding’s flavor: coconut + almond butter + chocolate chips). MacroBar has also just introduced their first breakfast bar: Apples + Walnuts. Containing a full serving of fruit, the new bar is also an excellent source of fiber and a good source of protein - the perfect way to energize and jumpstart your metabolism.
NUTRITION-WISE: Using whole foods, complex carbs and healthy fats to create a nutrient dense bar with better absorption of vitamins and minerals, MacroBars stay true to the macrobiotic promise of better health, a balanced lifestyle and a concern for the environment and all its inhabitants.
From bars created with carob (that is not only 3x richer in calcium, but has 1/3 less calories, and 17x less fat than chocolate), to bars that are reminiscent of your favorite candy bar as a kid (coconut, chocolate chips & almond butter), all of the ingredients in MacroBars were synergistically put their for a purpose: to help you feel better on both the inside and out.
100% plant-based, non-GMO, Organic, Kosher and free of gluten, soy, dairy and any other artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, MacroBars contain anywhere from 200 to 270 calories, 35-100 of which come from healthy fats, as well as 4-12 grams of protein, 1-5 grams of fiber, and 9-16 grams of sugar, depending on the flavor you choose. While this is a big range, it just goes to show you what diversity there is in their line of bars and flavors.
*MacroBars are made up of healthy, Organic ingredients, most of which are relatively easy to chew and are therefore good for both toddlers and adults to eat. However, many of the flavors do have quite a bit of sugar in them, so I would really check out the label and possibly only give my little ¼ - ½ bar at a time. Fortunately, there is a decent amount of protein, fiber and healthy fats in most of the options (which can help combat some of the sugar and insulin spikes), so this can be a good way to get some extra nutrition into your kids while making them believe they are getting a treat.
WHERE TO BUY: You can conveniently buy MacroBars on their Online Store, or to find the retail location that sells MacroBars nearest you, please visit their Store Locator.
PRICE: Single bars can be purchased for $2.89, or trays of 12 costs $34.68.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Filled with lots of good-for-you ingredients, and free from anything artificial, MacroBars’ story and promise to help promote better health, a balanced lifestyle and to show concern for the environment and all its inhabitants really does live up to the macrobiotic promise. Plus, whether you are looking for something for breakfast, a punch of protein after your workout, or a yummy and satisfying treat to help get you through your afternoon, MacroBar offers an option for every occasion.
And while I will admit that the taste of all the different varieties of MacroBars may not be for everybody out there, they really do have enough flavors to choose from that at least a couple of them are sure to satisfy even the most picky of eaters.
