Creating all of their bars in small batches, in order to ensure the taste and quality are just right, the makers of The GFB not only pay special attention to the ingredients that are used, making sure they are of the utmost quality, but also to the tastes and textures that these foods form when brought together. Available in Bars, Bites, and their all-new Power Breakfast Bowls, there is something for every gluten-free eater to help satisfy their breakfast and snacking needs.
Originally only showcasing Bars, the GFB line has expanded to now contain Bites, which are essentially a “cluster of goodness”, containing many of the same flavors as their bars, just in a more convenient size – and with less sugar grams to boot (which I definitely prefer!). Their new line of protein-packed Power Breakfast Bowls are also a great addition to GFB products, providing on-the-go oatmeal made with simple, real ingredients and a unique package that doubles as its own serving bowl.
With flavors including such things as Peanut Butter, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cranberry Toasted Almond, Oatmeal Raisin, Dark Chocolate Coconut, Coconut Cashew Crunch, and PB+J in bars and/or bites, their Power Breakfast Bowls also come in some pretty fantastic flavors, including: Apple Cinnamon, Coconut Cashew and PB+J, to name a few.
The founders of The Gluten Free Bar (GFB) both have celiac and thus, know how detrimental eating foods with gluten can be. They also realized, through their “gluten free quests” that typical gluten-free snacks are either healthy and natural, or tasty but made from questionable ingredients – unfortunately, never both. That’s why they made it their mission to create a delicious snack made with straightforward, recognizable ingredients. And The GFB was born.
Obviously The GFB is free of gluten and wheat, but it is also free of soy, dairy, casein, GMOs, trans-fats, and cholesterol. Plus, it is high in protein, vegan, all-natural, low in sodium, has Omega-3 fats, and is a good source of fiber.
Coming in at around 220-240 calories per bar, you will also find around 7-10 grams of healthy fats, 4 grams of fiber, and 10-12 grams of protein, depending on the flavor you choose. However, there is around 12-15 grams of sugar per bar which for me, is much more than I would typically prefer. I will say that they do use a lot of Organic Agave, Organic Brown Rice Syrup and Dates, which are better for you than Cane Sugar, but still…
The Bites are a lower-sugar and lower-calorie option, which in my opinion is a much better bet. They come in around 100-110 calories per 2-Bite serving, 4.5 grams of which are from healthy fats, as well as 2 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein and 5 grams of sugar. And by bites, I don’t mean literally. Their Bites are much bigger than a typical mouth-full J.
Finally, the Power Breakfast Bowls contain around 210-230 calories per serving, 7-8 grams of fat, 5-6 grams of fiber, 7-9 grams of protein and 9-12 grams of sugar, again, depending on the flavor you choose.
*Because of the high amounts of sugar in their bars, I wouldn’t advise giving a full one to a young child – it’s just way too much sugar for such a little body. In fact, I probably wouldn’t eat a full one myself; at least not in one sitting. However, The Bites offered by GFB don’t contain nearly as much sugar and are still filled with tons of other good-for-you ingredients, including protein, fiber, and healthy fats – so these would definitely be my go-to option. Even giving them a couple bites or a small piece of the Bars is also something I do, especially because the ingredients are all quite healthy, and you can consider them their “treat” – at least that’s what my kids call them J.
WHERE TO BUY:
Having first tried the GFB back in 2014, I had no idea their products were gluten-free. Only available in Bars, the had 6 great flavors to choose from, and a texture that was also spot on – not to chewy, not too crunchy – which is often hard to find in gluten-free snacks. I also loved the fact that there weren’t any unnecessary additives or fillers, which are also commonly found in wheat-less foods. However, I will admit that the amount of sugars in these bars were a bit bothersome, and therefore kept them off of my “pantry must-haves” list. Fast-forward to 2018, and their line has not only expanded to GFB Bites, they have Power Breakfast Bowls as well. With the Bites being quite low in sugar – and super tasty! – and all of the sugars in their Bowls coming from either Fruit or Maple Syrup, both of which I am all for (in moderation, of course), this is definitely a brand I can stand behind. They have also reduced the amounts of sugars in their Bars (which I’m obviously happy about too J).
Containing protein, fiber, and healthy fats, all of which help to “balance out” sugar grams [anyway], the foods by The Gluten Free Bar really are a must try by anyone with a gluten sensitivity. And even for those who don’t, I’d be really surprised if you didn’t find them as tasty and satisfying as I do!
