Back in January we did a review on the Gluten Free Bar (GFB). The response was great and everyone seems to love them. My only issue with them: is there is a bit more sugar (per serving) then I generally like to eat. Granted, it is low-glycemic organic agave, but still… Plus, sometimes you just want a “bite” of something rather than a full on bar (which is why you’ll find half-eaten bars in containers around my house :-/).
Well, GFB must have felt the same way because they have recently come up with the perfect answer to [my] concerns: Gluten Free Bites.
THE PRODUCT: Brought to you by the creators of the Gluten Free Bar, Gluten Free Bites provide the same great tastes and ingredients, just in a smaller, “bite-size” portion. Coated with crisped brown rice, to give you the perfect crunchy-chewy texture that’s signature to the original GFB, these bites are just as good (if not better!) than the full-sized Gluten Free Bars. NUTRITION-WISE: Obviously The GFB is free of gluten and wheat, but it is also free of soy, dairy, casein, GMOs, trans-fats, and cholesterol. Plus, it is high in protein, vegan, all-natural, low in sodium, has Omega-3 fats, and is a good source of fiber.
Certified Gluten-free, Vegan, and Kosher, Gluten Free Bites are available in 3 delicious flavors, including: Chocolate Cherry Almond, Dark Chocolate Coconut, and Coconut Cashew Crunch (my personal favorite).
Coming in at around 90-110 calories per 2-bite serving, you will also find around 3.5-5 grams of healthy fats, 2 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein. And, as opposed to the Gluten Free Bar, which can contain around 17 grams of sugar, there is only 6-9 grams of sugar per 2 bites.
*GFB Bites only contain around 6-9 grams of sugar per 2-bites, which means 3-4 ½ grams if only eating one. This is definitely a reasonable amount for a toddler, especially since they do contain quite a bit of protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
FINAL THOUGHTS: When I first tried The GFB (at Expo West ’14), I had no idea it was gluten-free. Besides the fact that there were 6 great flavors to choose from, the texture was also spot on – not to chewy, not too crunchy – which is often hard to find in anything gluten-free. Plus, there weren’t any unnecessary additives or fillers, which are also commonly found in wheat-less foods.
Needless to say, I was impressed. Even my “gluten loving” husband thinks they taste great, which is saying a lot ;). However, my only “negative” comment about The GFB was that they do contain quite a bit of sugar grams per serving. Fortunately, much of this is due to agave, which is low-glycemic and therefore won’t affect one’s blood sugar levels too much.
With that said, I was super excited to learn that The GFB had come out with a new line of Bites. Available in 2 of their most popular GFB flavors, as well as 1 that is all new, not only are these Bites absolutely delicious, they come in a re-sealable package, are the perfect size for a quick snack, and allow you to enjoy several different flavors in one sitting – not to mention the fact that they are also good for you!
