I Heart Keenwah Snacks Review: Savory Quinoa Puffs and Chocolate Puffs to Take Quinoa to a Whole New Level

When I first started hearing about quinoa 10+ years ago, the seeds itself were the only way to buy it. Now, you can find quinoa in practically every form and every food, from cereals and snacks to baby food and chocolate. Hey, I’m not complaining! It’s a great high protein addition and is why I Heart Keenwah has made it their product’s staple ingredient – and even named their entire brand after it!

THE PRODUCTS:

I Heart Keenwah, named that because the founders love quinoa (and because they wanted to use the phonetic spelling to help de-mystify quinoa and make it easy for people to try this amazing food), has become an originator of all things quinoa related. Using this ancient grain (although in reality, it’s a seed), in tons of different products, I Heart Keenwah has now added two new products to their snack line: Quinoa Puffs and Chocolate Puffs.

Quinoa Puffs:

Imagine the cheese puffs of your childhood, but all grown up – and much healthier! Made with quinoa and packing 5g of protein, these savory snacks come in four refined flavors, three of which are vegan; including: Aged Cheddar, Sea Salt Truffle, Sweet Chili and Herbes de Provence. Great as an afternoon snack, hors d'oeuvre, or crouton, each 25-puff serving also contains 120 calories and approximately 2-3 grams of fat.

Chocolate Puffs:

These light and crispy quinoa puffs are covered in Organic, Fair Trade dark chocolate and can undeniably help fend against junk food cravings! With only 6g of sugar per serving, you will also find 140 calories, 8 grams of which come from fats, 3-4 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. Available in Himalayan Pink Salt and Peanut Butter, these puffs are a new spin on chocolate-covered snacks that you can feel good about.

NUTRITION-WISE:

Still confused on what Quinoa actually is? Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah, like the brand’s namesake) is a South American superfood - an “ancient grain” (in reality, a seed) - that contains 9 amino acids, making it a complete protein. The quality of protein in quinoa is on par with that of meat and dairy, and no other seed or grain has that high quality of protein. It also contains a decent amount of fiber and doesn’t [generally] cause spikes in blood sugar like many grains do.

Proudly made in the U.S.A., I Heart Keenwah sources their quinoa from the most natural, sustainable source that they know – in Bolivia. They also prefer Bolivian quinoa for its superior quality. Bolivian quinoa, also known as royal quinoa or quinua real, is a larger seed versus conventional quinoa. Bolivian quinoa also has a strong nutritional profile and maintains a nutty, rich taste.

Furthermore, I Heart Keenwah’s quinoa puffs are all made with quinoa flour from Bolivia, as well. And their dried truffle used in the Sea Salt Truffle Quinoa Puffs is imported from Italy (fancy!).

All of their products are also Certified Gluten-Free, non-GMO Project Verified, Soy-free, Kosher, and most products (besides the Aged Cheddar Puffs) are Vegan and Dairy-Free as well.

*Easy to chew and/or melt in your mouth, toddlers as young as 10 months can safely eat the savory Quinoa Puffs from I Heart Keenwah. The Chocolate Puffs are also easy to chew, although they do have more sugar than I’d prefer to give a young child, and would suggest waiting until your child is 2+ years before introducing them to these tasty, chocolaty treats. However, if you want to give them a couple as a “special treat”, especially instead of something like M&Ms, I’m all for that. J

WHERE TO BUY:

You can purchase I Heart Keenwah snack foods via their Online Store, or at select retailers nationwide.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

If I had to choose one grain that I truly loved, it would be quinoa. Not only is it extremely versatile, it’s also delicious – and healthy! However, I must admit that it isn’t always the best tasting – depending on the brand and/or how it’s made or what it’s in. On the flip side though, the lines from I Heart Keenwah have all thoroughly impressed me, with their new savory Quinoa Puffs and Chocolate Puffs being no exception.

With 4 enticing flavors of Quinoa Puffs that are great on salads, as – or in – a side, or simply straight out of the bag, you’ll be amazed at how satisfying these little snacks can be for both you and your littles. The unique herb profiles are also a great way to introduce your toddlers to spices and help expand their palate – so [hopefully] they won’t be as picky as they get older. J

Or, if you’re craving something more on the sweet side, then the Chocolate Puffs are definitely the way to go! Available in Himalayan Sea Salt and Peanut Butter, these sweet little puffs are enrobed in indulgent dark chocolate and contain the perfect amount of crunch, making each handful deliciously satisfying – and surprisingly healthy.

Looking for a healthy and tasty way to curb your savory and/or chocolate cravings?! Then you should definitely check out I Heart Keenwah. Because it’s those small steps that make healthy living a lifestyle – so why not take one today?!
