How many of you have tried those “meal-kit delivery” services? You know, the ones where they send you recipes + all of the ingredients so you can create restaurant quality meals in the comfort of your own home.
Ok, and how many of you have heard of #Keto aka, the Ketogenic Diet? If so, do you really know what it’s all about? Yeah, me neither until earlier this year! (Read more about MY KETO VEGAN JOURNEY, here.)
Well did you know that Green Chef – one of my favorite make-at-home meal delivery services – has started creating a weekly box designed just for those who want to eat Keto?! I was lucky enough to receive a trial of one of these boxes and wanted to share my thoughts with all of you, below.
Let me first start off with what Keto is all about. For those of you who don’t know, eating a Ketogenic Diet consists of eating a high Fat, very minimal Carbohydrate diet, and then a moderate amount of Protein sprinkled in there, as well. In fact, a whopping 75% or so of your calories should come from [healthy] fats, and only 5-10% should come from carbs. This means that you virtually eat no sugar, in fruits or otherwise, and no grains or beans of any type, so that the only carbs you are getting are from those found in low-carb vegetables (ie, spinach, cauliflower, etc.). In short, you are eating a no-sugar, gluten-free, low-carb and high-fat diet all rolled into one.
And while this style of eating may seem extreme, you’ll be absolutely floored by how much better you feel, on both the inside and out! You will have more energy, less brain fog, and will ultimately lose weight as well – which is what the majority of people these days are going for, am I wrong?!

In the Keto meal kit that I received, there were 3 recipes, 2 servings each, for a total of 6 meals (which is standard for Green Chef’s service). They also made it a point to mention “that if you are maintaining ketosis, you may want to reduce your vegetable portion and save some for the next day. Abundant veggies are a hallmark of [Green Chef’s] service, and they made the decision to maintain that feature in their keto meals.”
Furthermore, their “chefs are actively working on creative way to keep the dishes interesting while driving down the carb content even further. In addition, [they] are working on adding helpful tips for customers to increase fat content.”
The meals I received included the following recipes, with their concurrent macronutrients:

Let me start off by saying that even before this post, I have purchased Green Chef’s meal kits on several occasions and have been really impressed with their offerings. One of the main reasons I have chosen their service – over many of the others – is because all of their foods are Organic. And while my home is not 100% Organic (whose is?!), I will only serve Organic meats, eggs, etc. and also believe that the majority of produce should be Organic (especially the Dirty Dozen), as well as nuts, oils, and the like.
I also like the unique recipes that they offer. Having been a personal chef for multiple families in the past, I truly do enjoy cooking and I don’t necessarily need a recipe to follow to create a great tasting meal. With that said, it’s nice to switch things up and get away from cooking the usuals (ie, I would NEVER have prepared a Lamb dish if I wasn’t sent Lamb in Green Chef’s Keto Box).
So more about the meals that I received: To state it simply, I was impressed! First off, all the recipes were loaded with vegetables – which was great for me since I don’t eat meat and therefore, only ate those whereas my husband and son ate the meat part of the dishes as well. There was also plenty of food so that while the meals state that they feed 2, you can really stretch them out – especially when feeding children (and when adding in additional ingredients like I did, since again, I didn’t eat the meat and my husband wanted some additional carbs).
The recipes, in general, were also super flavorful, simple to make, and impressive to serve. In fact, they were all unique enough that they weren’t something most people would probably ever make, but still created to be easy enough to understand [the recipe] and not “weird” that you wouldn’t want to eat them.
My one complaint however, (with this Keto box – and with Green Chef in general), is that they don’t allow you to choose which recipes you’d like to have included in your box, like other companies do, and you can only stick to one “meal type” at a time (ie, you can’t choose a Vegan recipe and then a Keto recipe too) – which would be GREAT for me since I don’t eat meat but my husband does.
All in all, I am so glad that Green Chef has come up with a Meal Kit designed specifically for those who eat Keto, as they are now helping to make this style of eating easier – and more enjoyable – than ever!
