For MOMS & MOMS-TO-BE and TODDLERS 2 YEARS+
When I used to hear the word “chip”, I would generally think about fried, greasy, and nutrition-less. Overly salty is another word that would often come to mind. Thankfully, companies have become much more in tune with the “health-conscious” population and started creating chips that were not only cooked in a more nutritious way, but that used much healthier ingredients as well. From Kale, to Snap Peas, to Assorted Root Vegetables, the idea of a “chip” is nothing like is used to be.
This couldn’t be more true than when it comes to coconut chips. Slightly browned and sweet, with the perfect amount of crunch, these snacks are amazingly delicious, and surprisingly addicting. One of my favorite brands – Dang Foods – where you really can’t stop at just one!
THE PRODUCT: Dang Toasted Coconut Chips has taken coconuts to a whole other level. Slightly sweet with just the right amount of crunch, these snacks are perfect for on-the-go, to sprinkle on top of salads, or even to add as a fro-yo topping.
Starting out as a result of snacking on some toasted coconut that was to be used for some Thai Lettuce Wraps, the idea of Dang Foods was born. As a family run snack company that “runs on love and coconuts” and goes by the motto “Dang, that’s good!”, Dang Foods is forging ahead fast, bringing unconventional culinary delights from around the globe to become convenient and delicious every day foods.
Made from the nutrient-packed copra, or meat of the coconut, Dang Toasted Coconut Chips are a delicious snack that provides loads of energy. Using mature coconuts that have been lightly seasoned with both sugar and salt and then toasted until golden brown, these high fiber snacks help to satisfy cravings with just a few small handfuls.
Available in both Original and Caramel Sea Salt varieties, Dang Toasted Coconut Chips can be purchased in both snack-size, and family-size bags.
NUTRITION-WISE: Non-GMO and free of gluten and cholesterol, Dang Toasted Coconut Chips are also Vegan, a good source of fiber, and are high in heart healthy Lauric Acid. In fact, coconuts have been one of the go-to foods in many cultures for generations, thanks to their abundance of good-for-you nutrition.
As mentioned, coconut meat is rich in Lauric Acid, a medium-chain triglyceride which has been found to have “a more favorable effect on HDL – aka ‘good’ cholesterol – than any other fatty acid, either saturated or unsaturated”; this lower total/HDL cholesterol ratio suggests a decrease in cardiovascular risk. Moreover, the MCTs in coconut can be easily burned by your body, which uses them as energy as opposed to storing them as fat.
Coconuts have also been show to be a great immunity booster, helping our bodies resist illness from disease-causing pathogens and fungi. Furthermore, coconut oil can positively affect our hormones for thyroid and blood-sugar control. In fact, people who take coconut oil tend to have improvements in how their bodies handle blood sugar since coconut can help improve insulin use within the body. Coconut oil can also boost thyroid function by helping to increase metabolism, energy, and endurance. It even helps increase digestion and enables your body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
Dang Toasted Coconut Chips contain about 160 calories, 90 of which come from healthy fats. They also have around 3 grams of fiber and 1 gram of protein per serving, as well as 10 grams of sugar.
*Dang Toasted Coconut Chips are really a great anytime snack for kids and adults of all ages. Filled with fiber and lots of healthy fats, there is probably a bit more sugar than I would prefer to give my little one. However, since there is a decent amount of fat and fiber in each serving, the sugar that they do contain won’t cause a blood-sugar spike like you may traditionally find. Plus, there are a lot of other healthy benefits to eating coconuts.
Generally speaking, I’d feel most comfortable only giving my toddler around a half of a serving at a time, which will probably satisfy just enough anyway thanks to the “perceived richness” that the toasted coconut gives off. And best of all, that saves the other half for me 😉
WHERE TO BUY: Dang Toasted Coconut Chips are conveniently available Online, or you can visit their Store Locator to find the retail location nearest you.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Coconuts truly are one of the most versatile foods I have seen. From the oil, to the milk, to sweet and savory dishes, coconuts can pretty much be used for anything. And one of my new favorite coconut-inspired foods has to be the chips.
Toasted to a golden-sweet perfection, these aren’t only great on their own, but can be used on and/or in just about anything, from: salads to oatmeal, to trail mix and cereal, to baked goods, fro-yo, etc…
And the ones from Dang Foods are some of the best I have ever tasted! These are a definite staple in my pantry from here on out and are sure to be in yours too!
