Bonga Foods: Helping to Make Baobab a Household Staple

Bonga Foods: Helping to Make Baobab a Household Staple

Baobab is one of those foods that few have heard of. But with organic superfoods becoming more and more mainstream, it certainly won’t be that way for long.

As one of the world’s most nutritious superfoods, Baobab has become the foundation for Bonga Foods, providing the perfect answer as a wholesome snack that kids love as much as the health-conscious do. Plus, the fact that the cultivation, harvest, and selling of this healthy African fruit helps to benefit local communities as well, makes this a product that anyone can easily stand behind.

THE PRODUCT: Bonga Foods was born out of a desire to create delicious, wholesome snacks that kids would love as much as adults [looking for healthy ingredients] do. And after discovering Baobab (BEY-oh-Bab), those at Bonga knew that they had found the answer to the type of product they’d been looking for.

With a light, tangy flavor that is full of good-for-you nutrients, this powder is the perfect addition to smoothies, baked goods, and oatmeal. You can also mix it with water, juice, yogurt or even into cookie batter, pancakes, and muffins for a simple, healthy addition to practically anything.

With eight species of baobab found around the globe: six in Madagascar, one in Australia, and the African variety, found in 20 sub-Saharan countries, baobab thrives in dry climates that have low to moderate seasonal rainfall. Harvesting the baobab fruit not only creates delicious, healthy products, but also nurtures local communities by providing sustainable income for women in southern Africa and protection of the ancient trees, which is another reason Bonga Foods has fallen in love with this product. In fact, 10% of all Bonga profits go to the foundation they have set up to further this cause.

Bonga Foods has a line of Superfood Powders and Chews that are both delicious and nutritious. With their Superfood chews available in 4 varieities, including: Mango, Pomegranate, Raspberry and Strawberry, and their Superfood powders available in 3 convenient sizes, including packets for on-the-go, there is always something for everybody with Bongo Foods.

NUTRITION-WISE: Consisting of over 50% fiber by weight, the majority of which is soluble fiber, Bonga Food’s Raw, Organic Baobab Superfood Powder is definitely one of the healthiest products you can find. Containing over 10 times the antioxidant power of blueberries, pomegranate, goji berries, and even acai, gram for gram, it also has more Calcium than milk and is loaded with Vitamin C, Magnesium, and Potassium as well.

One of the most amazing features of this organic, raw superfood is how simple it is to extract the powder: the pulp dehydrates naturally inside the fruit pods of the baobab tree, and then drops to the ground where harvesters collect it. The nutrients remain intact as the powder is simply separated from its seed and sieved in its natural form before packing. This ensures that it is never pasteurized, heat extracted, or freeze dried.

*The Baobab Superfood Powder is great for kids and adults of all ages, especially if you are looking to add more fiber and/or Calcium into their lives. However, there is quite a bit of sugars in the Chews so I’d recommend avoiding giving these to really young kids. Moreover, since they are pretty chewy, having at least one set of molars is advised.

WHERE TO BUY: You can conveniently purchase Bonga Foods products directly from their Online Store, or at a number of select HEB locations.

FINAL THOUGHTS: As a relatively new comer to Baobab, I honestly wasn’t sure how I would be able to add this powder into my life on a regular basis in order to make it “worth the purchase”. That is until I discovered the product lines from Bonga Foods.

With delicious fruit snacks that my son literally calls his “special treat”, and a Superfood Powder that is even available in on-the-go packets, this slightly sweet and tangy powder can literally be added to just about anything, giving your foods a delicious and nutritious punch without radically changing the flavor or texture. Plus, it’s such an easy and effortless way to add more fiber into your whole family’s diet – and we all know that we can probably use more of that!

However, I will say that there is quite a bit of sugar (per serving) in the Superfood Chews, especially for a little one, but this is just due to the fruit, not added sugars. I’ll generally only give my son a half of a serving though, since I prefer to limit his daily sugar intake and this way, we can both be happy.

Try any or all of Bonga Foods today and find out for yourself how delicious and convenient adding some Baobab into your life can be!
