Alter Eco Foods: Fair Trade and Organic, Chocolate, Rice, Sugar and Quinoa – Great for You and the Environment

For MOMS & MOMS-TO-BE and TODDLERS 6 MONTHS+

I’ll admit that my first impression of a new type and/or brand of food is generally made in a two part assessment: first off, it has to taste good (duh!), and secondly, it has to be good for me, or at least not bad for me. However, as I’ve become a mom and begun to think about the future for my children and how what we [as a society] do today will impact the world around them, I’ve started to pay more and more attention to what a company, as a whole, represents and if they believe in fair farming practices, preserving the fields and communities they source their foods from, and the environment as a whole.

Fortunately, I’m not the only one who thinks this way and am amazed by how many companies really do care just as much about how they source their foods as how much money they can make.

Alter Eco Foods is one of these companies and not only takes pride in how good their foods taste, but how good it is for both you and the environment.

THE PRODUCT: Alter Eco Foods is based on the premise that food is fundamental to life – and whole, healthy, delicious food can make life better for people all over the world. By working directly with small-scale farmers who grow their rice, quinoa, sugar and chocolate, Alter Eco helps them institute Fair Trade and Organic practices, all while assisting them in improving both quality of food and quality of life.

Extending from “flora” to “fauna and fields”, Alter Eco works with their co-op partners to preserve heirloom grains, replenish and reforest the land, and make it a point to offset more carbon than they emit.

Sourcing their ingredients from all over the globe, Alter Eco Foods creates a line of Chocolate, Rice, Quinoa, and even some Mascobado Cane Sugar, that can rival the best products you’ve probably ever tasted. From their Dark Coconut Toffee Truffles to their Mini Dark Noir Chocolate Bar, you are sure to find many of their foods that you just can’t get enough of! In fact, Alter Eco carries 12 different flavors of chocolate bars, 4 flavors of Truffles, 4 flavors of Quinoa, 3 flavors of Rice, and their one delicious bag of pure Cane Sugar.

NUTRITION-WISE: All of Alter Eco Foods are certified Organic and non-GMO. Furthermore, the majority of their products are Gluten-free (except for the Dark Twist chocolate), many of them are dairy-free, and all are Certified Fair Trade.

Using the finest ingredients from around the world, you can also be certain that you are truly getting the best with Alter Eco Foods, including no added or artificial colors or preservatives. Moreover, all of the products are made with your health in mind, including their nutrient-dense dark chocolate, protein-packed quinoa, whole-grain heirloom rice, and unrefined sugar from the Philippines, which is surprisingly filled with a healthy source of potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron.

*All of Alter Eco’s products are Certified Organic, which helps give me peace of mind when feeding them to my little one. Their rice, and quinoa in particular, are actually great first foods, and contain a healthy amount of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. Plus, they are easy to gum!

Their sugar, and line of chocolates are also surprisingly full of vitamins and minerals, although they are [obviously] full of sugar as well. For this reason, I wouldn’t give them to my toddler since I don’t want to expose him to “treats” until he is quite a bit older. However, if there were a bit of the Mascobado Sugar in something that my son happened to get a hold of, I wouldn’t be all that upset, because at least there are some vitamins and minerals in it ;) (I mean, I know I can’t keep him away from treats forever, but at least until he’s in school and knows that it is a “special occasion”.) Oh, and if your child is allergic to dairy, quite a few of their chocolate products do contain it, so be aware.

WHERE TO BUY: Alter Eco Foods are available on their Online Store, or if you prefer to buy them in person, you can use their Store Locator to find the retail location nearest you.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I’ve got to say that I am really impressed with Alter Eco. Not only are their products organically sourced from around the globe, ensuring that they use the finest ingredients from the most favorable regions, they also go out of their way to make sure that their entire “supply chain” process helps the workers, the land, and the environment from which the foods come from.

With a delicious line of chocolates that will most certainly have you craving more, and some healthier whole-grain options to help balance out your sweet tooth, you are sure to find a number of products from Alter Eco that you won’t want to do with out!
