A pregnant woman’s body undergoes many changes — some of which are obvious and well-known, while others are fairly obscure. For instance, did you know that some of the effects of pregnancy on the body can result in vein disease? Increased blood volume, extra hormones and the pressure of the growing baby combine to increase the likelihood of developing vein disease.

The accompanying infographic, Baby Strains on Your Veins, discusses the four types of vein disease that commonly occur in women who are pregnant. These are venous insufficiency, varicose and spider veins, as well as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Most vein issues appear in the legs and some (but not all) may subside after birth.
